Abstract

Background: Patients with stage V Chronic Kidney Disease undergoing hemodialysis may experience intradialytic nausea. This symptom affects comfort, appetite, and tolerance during therapy. Lavender aromatherapy is a complementary nursing intervention that is simple to apply and may support relaxation. This case report aimed to describe lavender aromatherapy in nursing care for intradialytic nausea among patients with stage V Chronic Kidney Disease. Methods: A descriptive case report was conducted involving two patients in the Hemodialysis Unit of Hermina Hospital Bekasi. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, medical records, and the Rhodes Index of Nausea, Vomiting and Retching. The intervention included standard nausea management and inhaled lavender aromatherapy during hemodialysis. Results: The first patient was a 48-year-old man with hypertension, while the second patient was a 52-year-old man with type II diabetes mellitus. In the first patient, the nausea score decreased from 5 to 2 at the first session and reached 0 at the following sessions. In the second patient, the score decreased from 4 to 2 at the first session and reached 0 at the next two sessions. Both patients appeared more relaxed and reported no discomfort related to aromatherapy. Conclusion: Lavender aromatherapy as an adjunct to nausea management may help reduce intradialytic nausea in patients with stage V Chronic Kidney Disease.
